The director of type evaluations for the Holstein Association defines each major factor as he assigns factor scores and final scores.

The biological range (1-50) is defined for all 15 linear traits by using a ruler and specific anatomical locations on the cow.

To show how the concepts are used during competitions, each trait is discussed and scored for four widely varying Holstein cows.
