Livestock Judging
Breeding Heifer Evaluation
A livestock judging coach whose collegiate teams have won three championships helps students judge breeding heifers using the following five criteria—
- Structural Soundness: angle of shoulder and pastern and examples of defects
- Volume: chest width, depth of body and shape of ribs
- Balance: size, shoulders, depth, neck and hip
- Femininity: refinement, sex character and maternal traits
- Performance Data: includes an excellent discussion of EPD
A practice class of shorthorn heifers is placed, with a polished set of collegiate oral reasons by a champion collegiate livestock judging team member.
Then, students hear official placings both with and without EPD data.
The goal of Livestock Judging is to introduce the purpose of evaluation and the desired phenotypic traits of the ideal breeding heifer.
Objectives covered are:
- to identify and list the major factors considered in breeding heifer evaluation
- to analyze and interpret a set of performance records
- to evaluate and defend the placing of a breeding heifer class
